Atlantic City, NJ, August 9, 2019 – August 11 marks the annual 811 Day, a date intended to remind homeowners and contractors of the importance of calling 811 before engaging in digging projects. By law, homeowners and contractors are required to dial 811 at least three full business days before digging – whether installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or laying a patio. No matter how big or small, diggers risk striking utility lines when they are unmarked, plus injury and interruption to service that can lead to costly repairs and fines.
When dialing 811, callers connect to New Jersey One Call, the state center that notifies the appropriate utility companies of the caller’s intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the proposed digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Each utility is marked by its designated color as noted in the chart below, with marks serving as a guide for safe digging.
With safety as its top priority, South Jersey Gas educates its customers on the importance of 811 through outreach events and digital resources. In partnership with utilities across New Jersey, South Jersey Gas is hosting an 811 event at the Home Depot in Hazlet, NJ (3700 Route 35, Hazlet) on August 11 from 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. For more information on safe digging, visit Call811.com or Southjerseygas.com/Safety-Education/Safe-Digging-Call-811.aspx.
