Borgata Goes Green;
Signs 20-Year Contract with Marina Energy for Renewable Energy
FOLSOM, NJ – Marina Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries, announced the signing of a new 20-year contract with Marina District Development Company, LLC to provide up to 5.5 megawatts of green power to the expanding Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City. The new agreement was prompted by Borgata’s continued interest in renewable energy at the AC Landfill Energy’s methane-to-electric power generation facility located in Egg Harbor Township and a similar plant in Warren County owned by WC Landfill Energy. Both landfill energy projects are owned by joint venture of Marina Energy LLC and DCO Energy LLC.
These facilities use methane gas that would normally be flared off every day to power an engine generator. The electricity generated is used to power landfill facilities and, now, the extra will be used for Borgata. The balance of electricity needed to power Borgata’s operations will continue to come from other sources.
“By pursuing this type of project, Borgata will be able to meet a significant portion of its energy requirements,” explains South Jersey Industries Vice President Al Ruggiero. “This is a natural complement to Borgata’s choice for heating and cooling and we are proud to further expand our role as their energy partner.”
Early in 2005, Borgata extended its 20-year contract with Marina Energy to provide heating and cooling services as well as electricity to the casino resort via its Marina Thermal Plant.
“Using green energy from the landfills is a natural extension to our pursuit of energy alternatives,” states Borgata’s Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Vice President Kevin Sullivan. “We chose the Marina Thermal plant because we wanted an excellent cost-effective energy alternative for heating and cooling.”
Borgata began taking delivery of the “green power” in December 2005.
Marina District Development Company is a joint venture between Boyd Gaming Corporation and MGM Mirage.
