Opening of Marina Energy Plant Provides Fuel for New Development in Atlantic City
FOLSOM, N.J. -- What we are celebrating today is the next chapter in SJIs energy services leadership and another chapter in our SJI story of success and investment in the economic growth of Atlantic City. This facility we are opening today is another tangible demonstration of our commitment to the area. Following those words from Ed Graham, president and COO of South Jersey Industries the parent company of Marina Energy, a host of dignitaries including Senator William Gormley, Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford, Deputy Mayor Ernest Coursey, Atlantic County Executive, Dennis Levinson and SJI CEO Charles Biscieglia, cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the new $54 million plant. The 26,000 square foot plant, located in the Renaissance Pointe area of Atlantic City, will provide hot and chilled water necessary for all of The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spas heating, cooling and domestic hot water.
Marina Energy LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of South Jersey Industries, has a 20 year contract to provide heating and cooling services as well as electricity and natural gas to The Borgata. Two miles of underground pipes connect the plant with the Borgata. The plant is capable of providing nearly 30,000 gallons of chilled or heated water per minute. The water, which runs through a closed loop of pipes, passes through energy transfer stations at the casino hotel where it heats or cools air used for climate control. The offsite energy plant saved two acres of land at the Borgata that can be used for other purposes. According to Borgatas Senior Vice President, Kevin Sullivan there is another more important benefit. By having the experts build and operate our energy source it allows us to concentrate on what we know best, which is the gaming business.
The Marina Project is a win-win situation for all the parties involved. The Borgata benefits from an efficient, cost effective energy alternative that allows them to maximize their offering of gaming and entertainment experiences. SJI benefits from the efficient operation of the plant, and expansion of casino development in the Renaissance Pointe area. Atlantic City benefits from the tax ratables and enjoys the reputation of a second wave of high quality casino and entertainment development and cutting edge energy solutions. DCO Energy of W. Atlantic City will operate the plant.
