S&P Announces Changes to U.S. Index
South Jersey Industries Added to S&P SmallCap 600 Index  

         FOLSOM, N.J. – The 8-member panel of Standard & Poor’s U.S. Index Committee has named Folsom-based South Jersey Industries (NYSE:SJI) to the S&P SmallCap 600 Index. The addition of SJI, the holding company for natural gas utility South Jersey Gas and other energy-related subsidiaries, becomes effective after the close of trading on Friday, December 2 nd. The S&P SmallCap 600, introduced in 1994, covers approximately 3% of the U.S. equities market.

         Membership in the S&P SmallCap 600 is based upon a company having market capitalization ranging from $300 million to $1 billion; financial viability, usually measured as four consecutive quarters of positive-as-reported earnings; adequate liquidity and a reasonable per-share price; and a public float of at least 50% of the stock.

         SJI reports a current market capitalization of $815 million and is on track to post its 7th consecutive year of record earnings. Prior to S&P’s announcement, the trading volume of SJI’s common stock averaged approximately 65,000 shares per day on 28.7 million shares outstanding. Insiders hold about 1.4% of those shares. SJI’s closing price on November 29, 2005 was $28.40.

         SJI’s long-term performance target is to deliver, on average, at least 6% to 7% annual earnings per share growth and to increase its common stock dividend by 3% to 6% per year.
