Folsom,
NJ – The Low Income Home Energy
Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application deadline has been
extended to April 15, giving South Jersey Gas customers an
additional two weeks to apply for help to pay for heating
their homes.
LIHEAP is a federally funded grant program that provides
financial assistance for utility bill payment to qualified
low-income families. Eligibility is based on household size
and income. Those who qualify for the grant must apply for
the grant every year. If you were previously eligible, you
can reapply by submitting a state recertification form along
with all other required documents.
To qualify for LIHEAP, applicants must be responsible for
home heating costs and have a gross income at or below 175
percent of the federal poverty level. For additional information
on LIHEAP and its restrictions, please call 1-800-510-3102
or visit http://www.nj.gov/dca/dcr/hea/index.shtml.
Customers can go to the following agencies in the SJG service
area to apply or for help applying: Atlantic Human Resources,
Camden County Council on Economic Development; Cape Human
Resources, Inc.; and Tri-County CAP.
The LIHEAP application is also an application for the Universal
Service Fund (USF) Program, allowing customers to apply for
two assistance programs at the same time. USF helps to make
natural gas and electric bills more affordable to low-income
families.
