Energy Efficiency Programs to Benefit Lower Cape Region

Cape May , NJ – At a time when many county residents and business owners are struggling due to the economy, new money-saving energy efficiency programs have been announced to provide relief.

South Jersey Gas, which has an office in Swainton, recently unveiled several programs targeted to homes, businesses and municipalities in its service territory who use natural gas. The stable of offers, including generous rebates and zero-interest financing for SJG customers, complement existing New Jersey Office of Clean Energy Programs promoting energy savings and lower utility bills.

As a residential customer of the local utility, a homeowner has the opportunity to participate in the Home Performance with Energy Star Program, which offers up to $10,000 in rebates for those who increase their home’s energy efficiency by 25 percent. Other program incentives include zero-interest financing, increased rebates for switching to high-efficiency heating equipment and up to $1,000 in free air sealing to help make their home more comfortable.

For their commercial customers, SJG is strongly promoting energy efficiency measures that can help both small and large companies save money. Programs offer a range of financial incentives, design support, and technical assistance to integrate energy efficient and renewable energy technologies into new construction, upgrades, and new cooling and heating equipment installations.

SJG also hopes to partner with municipal officials in the county to encourage participation in the Local Government Energy Audit Program. This program identifies cost-justified energy efficiency measures for government-owned buildings, such as offices, courtrooms, town halls, police and fire stations, that will lower energy costs and help save taxpayers’ money. Middle Township, lead by Mayor Nate Doughty and committee members Susan DeLanzo and Stephen Barry, is just one area municipality that is interested in pursuing the audit to take advantage of the savings potential.

Middle Township officials are also in talks with SJG to extend natural gas service to the Del Haven community. They have requested that the SJG team conduct a feasibility study of serving the area of approximately 650 homes.
