Folsom, NJ - “While the spirit of neighborliness
was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few,
it is even more important now because our neighbors are so
many.” - Lady Bird Johnson
In a true display of “the spirit of neighborliness” and
community commitment, employees of South Jersey Industries
recently contributed a record amount of money to the company’s
annual United Way workplace campaign.
“Giving back to the community is not only something
we value as a company, but something that is a way of life
for many of our employees,” Edward J. Graham, SJI chairman,
president and CEO, said. “We are proud of the positive
impact our employees have on the region. Their United Way
contributions help ensure that our neighbors in need have
access to programs and organizations that work to meet basic,
pressing needs that may otherwise go unmet during these difficult
times.”
SJI and its employees have a long history of supporting
local non-profit and civic groups, a tradition that continued
with this successful United Way workplace campaign. During
the 2009 campaign, company employees contributed more than
$83,000 to 11 different regional United Way offices, an increase
of more than $9,000 over 2008.
“South Jersey Industries and their employees continue
to be a significant force in providing support to people
in need in our region,” United Way of Atlantic County
Executive Director John Emge said. “This is evidenced
in SJI receiving our United Way’s Community Champion
Award for 2008, then following that with a workplace campaign
that increased employee support to area United Ways by 12
percent. The corporate and employee generosity at SJI, even
well beyond the annual United Way campaign, sets them apart
in the region as a company that truly believes in giving
back to the community that supports their businesses.”
In addition to employee donations collected
through the workplace campaign, SJI also pledged a $55,000
corporate gift to benefit the United Way of Atlantic County’s
campaign fund. Since 1998, the company and its employees
have contributed more than $1 million in support of the UWAC.
Other regional United Way offices also receive corporate
donations.
