FOLSOM, N.J., January 22, 2018 – The following is a statement from Dave Robbins, President of South Jersey Gas, in response to Friday’s approval of the PennEast pipeline project by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC):

“Friday’s announcement by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission reaffirms the overall need for, and benefits provided by the PennEast project to our region’s natural gas and electric customers. This project is essential to providing safe, clean, reliable energy for those in the region, both now and for many years to come.

The PennEast project will provide South Jersey Gas’ customers access to one of the largest and most affordable sources of energy in the country. This lower cost energy will help make the region a more attractive place to live and work, while creating jobs to support the economy.

Additionally, this important project will allow South Jersey Gas to improve reliability, ensure price stability, and meet growing customer demand. Had PennEast been available during the recent extreme cold weather to provide low cost natural gas, our customers would have experienced incremental and substantial energy savings. Customers would be better protected from drastic price increases like those experienced in January, when natural gas costs in New Jersey were 30 times higher than those in Pennsylvania.

In recent years, demand for natural gas has increased significantly for residential, commercial and industrial customers. PennEast will not only allow South Jersey Gas to meet current customer needs, but it will also ensure that future energy needs of the region are met.”
