SJI Employees Plan to Participate in Virtual MLK Day Of Service

Newsroom > South Jersey Industries News

FOLSOM, NJ January 18, 2021 - Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, employees of South Jersey Industries (SJI) and its utilities, South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas, will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by participating in virtual Day of Service programs.

“This is our fourth year honoring MLK Day with a Day of Service and our first being done virtually,” said Shawn Abner-Purnell, Director Diversity and Inclusion. “Each year, the growing number of volunteers demonstrates SJI’s focus on community service as a core value of our company.”

As we acknowledge MLK Day is “a day on, not a day off,” employees are invited to participate in these virtual projects and events from the Jersey Cares and the State of NJ:

  • Virtual cards - volunteers will create electronic cards including pictures and inspirational quotes, and virtual activity packets for seniors, teachers, and first responders.
  • Virtual COVID safety signs - volunteers will create COVID-19 safety signs to be hung up throughout local school buildings.
  • Virtual walk - volunteers will set up a walk in their neighborhood as a way to support the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and social justice causes.
  • Senior reading series - volunteers will record themselves reading chapters of popular novels to bring entertainment to senior citizens during these unprecedented times.
  • Virtual Panel Discussion – West Windsor Arts Center hosts a panel discussion and service projects.
  • MLK Virtual Youth Conference - The State of New Jersey Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission will host a Virtual Youth Conference "Youth, We Hear You."
  • Ocean City Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony – Ocean City is holding a virtual ceremony where they will honor a resident with a Community Service Award.
  • Rowan University Scholarship Celebration and Day of Service – Rowan University event will feature speakers, including a pre-recorded message from Gov. Phil Murphy.

SJI and its utilities also encourage employees to safely perform neighborhood acts of service with their families, reflect on the legacy of Dr. King with audio and video recordings, and give to one of  SJI’s community partners: the Community Foodbank of New Jersey.

Whatever their activity, employees can encourage their friends and families by taking a selfie with the hashtags #SJI, #MLKDay or #CommunityStartsatHome.
