Alliance for Action Recognizes South Jersey Gas for Infrastructure Project that Enhances Natural Gas Supply Resiliency to Brigantine

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ February 23, 2022 – South Jersey Gas, a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries (NYSE: SJI), is celebrating Engineers Week by recognizing the accomplishments of its own team of engineering professionals whose work continues to enhance the company’s infrastructure for a better today and tomorrow.
The New Jersey Alliance for Action, an organization dedicated to improving the state’s economy through promoting capital construction and infrastructure investment, recently named South Jersey Gas the recipient of one of its “New Jersey’s Leading Capital Construction Project” awards for 2022. South Jersey Gas received the award for its Brigantine Bridge Redundancy Project, a $6.5M infrastructure project aimed at creating a more reliable and resilient natural gas supply to the city of Brigantine.

Completed in July 2021, The Brigantine Bridge Redundancy Project included installing a 12” steel natural gas pipeline beneath the Absecon Inlet using the horizontal directional drilling process. The pipeline, which runs from Atlantic City to Brigantine, provides an additional source of natural gas supply to Brigantine should a natural disaster or severe weather event occur. Prior to the completion of the project, a 10” steel pipeline that suspends from the Brigantine bridge was the city’s sole source of natural gas supply.
The Brigantine Bridge Redundancy Project is one of four projects in the second phase of the South Jersey Gas Storm Hardening and Reliability Program (SHARP II). Initiated in 2018, the three-year infrastructure investment program focused on conducting system enhancements along the coastal region of Southern New Jersey. In addition to the Brigantine project, the SHARP II program also included the installation of 8.5 miles of distribution main via the Absecon Island Loop and Ocean City Loop projects. South Jersey Gas also installed 9,100 excess flow valves – mechanical safety devices designed to shut off the flow of natural gas automatically in the event of a service line break – within barrier island communities.
