Our sustainable energy solutions efforts here at South Jersey Industries took a major leap forward when we broke ground on one of the largest food waste-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities in the United States. In partnership with Captona and RNG Energy Solutions, SJI is developing the Linden Renewable Energy (LRE) project in Linden, New Jersey, a transformative initiative that aims to turn organic waste into energy while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A New Era in Waste-to-Energy Innovation
The LRE project is planned to utilize anaerobic digestion technology to convert food waste into bio-methane, a renewable form of natural gas. It is anticipated that this bio-methane will then be refined to meet pipeline-quality standards and integrated into the Elizabethtown Gas system.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
Landfills contribute nearly a third of human-made methane emissions in the U.S., a potent greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to climate change. By diverting organic waste from landfills, the LRE facility is expected to avoid approximately 120,000 metric tons of CO2e emissions annually.
Additionally, the project presents a necessary waste management solution for New York City, Northern New Jersey, and surrounding regions. State and local regulations mandate the diversion of organic waste from landfills, and the LRE facility offers an efficient and environmentally responsible way to comply with these laws.
Economically, the facility is poised to create hundreds of jobs throughout its construction and operational phases. The project also sets a precedent for similar large-scale waste-to-energy initiatives across the country, demonstrating the viability of sustainable infrastructure investments.
The Numbers Behind the Project
Construction of the facility began in January 2024 and is projected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025. Upon full operation, it is expected to process up to 1,475 tons of waste daily, producing approximately 3,783 MMBtu of RNG—equivalent to the energy content of 30,200 gallons of gasoline per day.
A Step Toward a Greener Tomorrow
The Linden Renewable Energy project is more than just a facility — it’s a symbol of progress in the push for a more balanced energy future. With cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to sustainability, this project exemplifies how businesses and communities can work together to transition toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
