At SJI, our more than 1,200 employees are the driving force behind our mission to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable energy to our more than 730,000 customers and communities in Central and South Jersey. During Careers in Energy Week (October 20–24, 2025), we’re proud to celebrate the people—on the ground and behind the scenes—and programs that fuel our success.
Careers in Energy Week
Careers in Energy Week represents an industry-wide effort to encourage growth and expand access to jobs within the energy sector, while expressing gratitude for the men and women who work tirelessly to meet growing energy needs. As the skills required within the industry continue to evolve and shift, it is important that we ensure that the incoming workforce is equipped with the knowledge they need to seamlessly break into their careers. The work that energy professionals carry out to power our lives is so vital; SJI commemorates that hard work not only this week, but every day.
How We Support Our Workforce
At SJI, investing in our employees means investing in our energy future. Across the board, at SJI, South Jersey Gas, and Elizabethtown Gas, we recognize the need to set our employees up for success. That’s why we provide them with several opportunities to further their education, seek professional development, and embrace community engagement:
- Through the South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas Workforce Development Programs, individuals can kickstart their careers or advance their knowledge in energy efficiency with no-cost Building Performance Institute (BPI) training and certification classes. We are excited to offer trainings to bolster the local workforce and support New Jersey’s more energy-efficient future. In addition to training, South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas will work to connect successfully certified participants with potential employment opportunities. Individuals interested in participating in the Workforce Development Program can submit a registration form on the South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas websites. Courses are intended for graduating high school seniors or individuals who are 18 years or older. All courses will take place in Long Branch, New Jersey.
- Through our career development program, EmpowerU, we provide employees access to over 16,000 LinkedIn Learning courses personalized according to their job positions, skills, and experiences. Our Tuition Reimbursement Program goes one step further to help our team members learn new skills and obtain certifications and degrees.
- Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are open to all employees and play a vital role in enhancing engagement and building an inclusive, collaborative workplace. As of 2025, SJI proudly supports seven Employee Resource Groups that create meaningful opportunities for connection, learning, and advocacy.
- SJI is committed to providing financial support and educational resources to the next generation of energy professionals. SJI regularly provides scholarships in partnership with the following organizations to help inspire and support the next generation of students looking to pursue careers in energy, STEM, and beyond: The American Association of Blacks in Energy - South Jersey Chapter (AABE-SJC), New Jersey Utilities Association, New Jersey Association of Counties, Atlantic Cape Community College, Rowan University, Stockton University, Union County College, Junior Achievement of New Jersey, and Sussex County Community College.
