Winter Weather Alert: How to Prepare for Winter Storms

2/4/2026

With any major winter storm, especially those considered a once-in-a-decade occurrence bringing over a foot of snow and freezing temperatures, there are certain precautions that need to be taken.

SJI is here to help our South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas customers stay informed and prepared with a few tips that can help keep their homes safe, warm, and comfortable during severe weather.

Tips for Keeping Your Home Warm and Safe

  • Insulate your home and seal drafty windows and doors to reduce heat loss.
  • Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature and lower it when sleeping or away.
  • Stock up on essentials, including blankets, flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable food in case of power outages.
  • Charge your electronic devices and have extra batteries on hand in case of a power outage.
  • If using a generator, operate it outdoors only and away from windows, doors, and vents.

How SJI Can Help During Winter Storms

At SJI, we’re prepared to support South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas customers during winter storms.

Customers can help us by keeping the area around their natural gas meter free of snow and ice by removing any buildup by hand or with a broom and keeping paths to the meter clear and accessible for technicians.

While natural gas lines are underground and generally protected from severe weather, safety remains essential. According to American Gas Association, 1 in 650 natural gas customers experience a planned or unplanned outage in any given year.

Never attempt to turn your gas service on or off yourself. If you smell natural gas, which smells like rotten eggs, leave the area immediately, call 911, and then contact South Jersey Gas (1-800-582-7060) or Elizabethtown Gas (1-800-492-4009). Do not re-enter the premises until authorized by emergency responders or utility personnel.

At SJI, we’re here to help keep our communities safe and warm—before, during, and after winter weather. For more safety tips, please visit  South Jersey Gas - Committed Safety or Elizabethtown Gas - Committed to Safety
